Week By Week Breakdown
Week 1  We start by getting used to stick handling. The main emphasis of this week is:
  • Using both sides of your stick
  • Keeping your head up while you stick handle
  • Skating with the puck

Week 2

This week we build upon the stick handling we did the week before. We start passing the puck. Main ideas of this week:

  • Sending the puck rather than hitting it
  • Following through so you point where you want the puck to go
  • Passing using both your forehand and your backhand'
  • Keeping your head up

Week 3

Shooting. We learn about the different types of shots in hockey. We learn and practice:

  • Wrist Shot
    • Keeping you stick on the puck the whole time
    • Following through so you point where you want the puck to go
    • Keeping your head up
  • Snap Shot
    • Using your wrist to drive the puck
    • Making good and quick contact
    • Keeping your head up
  • Slap Shot
    • Skating through the puck
    • Keeping your balance
    • Keeping your head up

Week 4 The next two weeks we spend time doing drills that put all of the skills we have learned together. We also learn to start using our feet to direct and move the puck.
Week 5 We continue using all of our skills. we start to scrimmage a little and work on team play.
Week 6 This is the last week of the class and we play a game.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do they get to keep the jersey?    Yes. The jersey is for the students to keep.

Can they hit?   No hitting is allowed during the class. Student do collide during drills and scrimmages though. That is why full gear is recommended.

Does the rink provide gear?   Unfortunately we do not provide equipment to the students.

What is they miss a class?   No problem.

Can I come out with my child   We do not allow parents to come out on the ice unless you have a prior arrangement with the coach.

What can my child do at home?   Each week we tell the students what they can do at home to reinforce the lessons that we practiced. Usually it involves using a a tennis ball to practice.

I do not know if my child shoots right or left.   We see students every session that have the wrong stick. If you are unsure you can always talk to the coach before class and pick up a stick in the Pro-Shop at the rink or maybe borrow one for the session to make sure that is the way they want to shoot.

How do I size my child's stick.

General rule of thumb:

  1. Have you child stand without shoes on
  2. Hold the stick in front of them
  3. Mark the stick were it is just touching the bottom of their nose
  4. Cut the stick at that point
